Compounds Notes

Compounds Notes

Notes must be handwritten in order to count for a grade--no printed copies allowed.

Protons + Neutrons + Electrons = an atom (of elements)
Atoms + atoms = compounds
Compounds + compounds = stuff around us.

A
chemical bond is the force of attraction that holds two atoms together.

An
ionic bond is the force of attraction between two oppositely charged ions.

Metals lose electrons to form positive ions in an ionic bond

Nonmetals gain electrons to form negative ions in an ionic bond.

Ionic compounds
form when a metal reacts with a nonmetal.  These compounds are neutral.

Ionic compounds are brittle, have high melting points, and tend to dissolve easily in water.
