Metric System Notes

Notes must be handwritten in order to count for a grade--no printed copies allowed.

Metric system - scientific system of measurement.

Meter - the basic unit of length.

Light-year - the distance light travels in one year.

Volume - is the amount of space an object takes up.

Liter - the basic measuring unit of volume.

Cubic Centimeter - the metric unit used to measure the volume of solids.

Mass - is a measure of the amount of matter in an object.

Kilogram - The basic unit of mass in the metric system.

Gram - one-thousandth of a kilogram

Weight - a measure of the attraction between two objects due to gravity.

Newton - the basic unit of measurement of weight in the metric system.

Density - the relationship between mass and volume.

Celsius - the measurement scale for temperature in the metric system.

Dimensional Analysis - the skill of converting one unit to another.

Conversion Factor - a fraction that always equals one, used to perform dimensional analysis.
