1) Physical property - can be observed without changing the substance into something else.
2) Chemical property - observed when a substance interacts with another substance.
3) Atomic mass - the average mass of one atom of the element.
4) Mendeleev noticed that patterns appeared when the elements were arranged in order of one particular physical property - increasing atomic mass.
5) Periodic table - the properties of elements repeat in each period - or row - of the table.
6) Each square of the periodic table usually includes the elements atomic number, symbol, name, and atomic mass.
7) Symbol - the symbol for an element usually contains either one or two letters.
8) Group - the elements in a column (also called a family)
9) Period - horizontal rows on the periodic chart.
10) An element's physical properties can be predicted from it's location in the periodic table.
11) Metal - usually give up their valence electrons in a chemical reaction.
12) Nonmetal - usually gain or share valence electrons in a chemical reaction.
13) Metalloid - have some properties of metals and some properties of nonmetals.
14) The periodic table works because it's based on the structure of atoms, especially the valence electrons.
