The Earth's Cycles

The Earth's Cycles Notes

Notes must be handwritten in order to count for a grade--no printed copies allowed.

Hemisphere - half of the globe
Atmosphere - the air that surrounds the earth
Lithosphere - All of the land of the earth
Hydrosphere - All of the water of the earth

The
Nitrogen Cycle is the movement of nitrogen from the soil then to living things and finally back to the atmosphere.

Our bodies need nitrogen to make protein.  Protein is used to make the muscles of your body.

78% of the atmosphere is Nitrogen

The
Nitrogen Cycle:
Step 1: Bacteria in the soil absorb nitrogen from the air.
Step 2: Bacteria transforms nitrogen to nitrates.
Step 3: Plants absorb the nitrates.
Step 4: Plants turn the nitrates into proteins.
Step 5: Animals eat the plants.
       Step 6: The Animal dies.
Step 7: Nitrogen is returned to the atmosphere as the animal decays.

The
Oxygen Cycle:
Animals breathe in oxygen, use it for energy, and breathe out carbon dioxide
Plants take in carbon dioxide, use it for energy, and release oxygen.

The
Water Cycle:
Step 1: Evaporation from the ocean
Step 2: Condensation into a cloud
       Step 3:
Precipitation onto the earth's surface
Step 4: Runoff into the ocean
