Oceanography Notes

Notes must be handwritten in order to count for a grade--no printed copies allowed.

1) Ocean water is a mixture of gases and solids dissolved in pure water.
2) Oceanographers - scientists who study the ocean.
3) Salinity - term used to describe the amount of dissolved salts in ocean water.
4) Surface zone - zone where ocean water is mixed by waves and currents.
5) Thermocline - zone in which the temperature of ocean water drops rapidly.
6) Deep zone - area of extremely cold ocean water below the thermocline.
7) The animals and plants in the ocean can be classified into three major groups according to their habits and the depth of the water in which they live.
8) Plankton - animals and plants that float at or near the surface of the ocean.
9) Nekton - forms of ocean life that swim.
10) Benthos - organisms that live on the ocean floor.
11) The classification of the ocean into life zones I based on the conditions in the ocean - conditions that vary widely.
12) Intertidal zone - coastal region that lies between the low and high tide lines.
13) Neritic zone - area of the ocean that extends from the low tide line to the edge of the continental shelf.
14) Bathyal zone - open-ocean zone that begins at a continental slope and extends down about 2000 meters.
15) Abyssal zone - open-ocean zone that begins at a depth of about 2000 meters and extends to an average depth of 6000 meters.
